How the pros run it

01

Let the flex do the packing and the cutting

A flexible blade fills when you press it into a cavity and finishes when you draw it nearly flat so it bows over the spot. Two motions — press in, wipe off — cover most household repairs. Keep the angle low on the finishing wipe so you cut the compound flush instead of dragging it out.

02

Carbon wants drying

Hardened carbon takes an edge and rusts. Wash the blade and dry it before it goes in the drawer; a rust bloom pits the edge and streaks the next coat (steel maintenance, trade reference). If you want a drawer knife you never have to think about, the stainless small joint knives skip that ritual.

03

Keep the edge clean and true

A nicked or compound-crusted edge prints into every wipe; scrape it clean after each session and dress a dent out with a light file held square.
