Blend boxes from the first tile
batch variation is real in exactly the tile this width serves, and discovering it at the grout stage is discovering it forever. Sight lines low and often: crouch and sight down each course against the chalk — at 3/16″ a straight line beside charming irregular edges is the whole aesthetic, and the eye at floor level catches drift the standing eye misses. Meter, then trust the line: place the spacer, let the joint breathe around it, land the course on chalk — the datum-not-dictator habit in one motion. Load the wall spacers honestly: heavy rustic wall tile at wide joints is the line’s hardest slump case; two tombstones per joint side, snug, and re-check the bottom course before the mortar’s open time ends. Wide joints telegraph sloppy pulls: a spacer dragged sideways out of a deep 3/16″ joint furrows the bed’s edge — pull straight up, needle-nose for the stubborn ones.
