Two hands, or one hand well back
The seven-inch handle is meant to be gripped with both hands for a long slabbing draw, or gripped near the butt for maximum leverage; a mid-handle one-hand grip wastes what the tool is for. Body behind the draw, off hand out of the line. Long two-hand pulls generate real force — plant the work, and keep any steadying hand clear of and behind the blade’s path, because a knife this long lunges far if it breaks free. Progressive strokes in rubber and hide; low angle so the long edge shears. Maintain the edge: hardened high-carbon steel honed square and keen, wiped dry after wet work. The compression-riveted handle is the most durable joint in the line, but the blade is still a knife you sharpen, not a blade you replace.
