✕CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN

  • Coverage work. Doors, cabinet ends, open panels, and every field wider than a few lanes — the inch given up is pure cost there; the 4″ pair (92005, or Hyde 47401) and the tiers above own it.
  • Sub-3″ targets. Muntins, glazing bars, 2″ stiles, quirks and beads: brush country, stated without embarrassment.
  • Slot-access problems. When the approach is the constraint — the gap behind a radiator, the last inches beside an appliance — width doesn’t help; the wire 47400 does.
  • Pole work, as sold . Threading undocumented, never asserted; height jobs route to the documented Hyde column.
  • Wall fields, obviously — but said once: the 9″ tier and 18″ 47420 are the coverage machines; the 3″ is their opposite pole.

How the pros run it

01

Load for the width

A 3″ cover holds less paint than the tray habit expects — lighter loads, more trips, and wipe the shoulders every time; on narrow targets the shoulders are always one lazy load from printing. Lay off everything. Narrow work is close-viewed work: every lane gets its unloaded pass in the long direction, and at this width lay-off passes cost seconds. Square beats clever. The whole point of the width is rolling square to the target — if you find yourself angling the 3″ to dodge an edge, the target is below its floor and the brush takes over. Cage care, standard and non-negotiable: seat to the stop, straight pulls, rinse the four rods until water runs clear, spin, dry. A narrow cage wobbles from dried film exactly like a wide one, and shows it faster at eye level.
