Pull the whole edge
A 6″ blade earns its keep on the single long draw — engage the full length and pull through, rather than sawing with a short section. It is the cleanest cut a hand knife makes on wide, flexible sheet.

Protect the layer beneath
The square end is your insurance against scoring the good paper under a roll wrap or the foam under a cover — keep the blade low and let the corner ride the surface; the moment you steepen the angle, the corner starts to dig.

Low and sliced on cloth; scribed and progressive on gasket and rubber
Textiles cut with a low slicing draw under tension; dense sheet cuts with repeated scribed passes down the same line. The blade is the same; the stroke changes with the material.

Maintain the high-carbon edge
Hone on a stone, strop, and wipe dry after damp work. A long blade holds a lot of edge — keep all of it keen, because a dull section in the middle of a long draw shows as a drag mark in the cut.
