Is this the right tool for your job?
✓CHOOSE THIS WHEN
- Blade: S tiff High Carbon steel scraper blade for tough scraping jobs.
- Half-round cut-out for cleaning paint rollers.
- Flat end for opening paint can lids.
✕CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
- Fine finish filling.
- A stiff blade cannot feather compound flat — its corners plough tram-lines and its edge pulls fill back out of shallow depressions instead of blending over them; that is the flexible putty knife’s job, one line over, and the two tools are a system rather than a redundancy.
- It is not a dedicated wall scraper — for broad releasing fields, step up to a pull scraper or wide chisel.
- It is not a struck tool: never hammer the blade or its heel along a glazing rabbet, and never use it as a chisel driven by a mallet — it has no spine built to take blows.
- And it is not a nail-setter: with no HammerHead, the 02970 leaves every popped drywall nail for a separate hammer — which is precisely what the 02980 was built to fix.

How the pros run it
01
Grip
handle in the palm, index finger laid down the spine for angle control on precision passes — popping a blister, V-ing a crack — and a full fist for power scraping. Angle: low is the rule for the blade, 15–30°; the edge should shear material off the surface, not chisel into it. Direction: push for power, pull for control. Edge care, carbon-specific: this blade wants a clean, square, slightly keen edge — dress it with a mill file held square the minute it dents or rolls, because a damaged edge prints every flaw into the surface, and because carbon rewards you with a keener edge than stainless will hold. The wipe: after roller-cleaning, wet scraping, or any duty that leaves the blade damp, wipe it dry — carbon steel blooms rust where stainless would shrug. That one ritual is the entire cost of the keener edge.
