Steep angle, edge trailing, pull toward the body with weight over the cut
Start with a rough edge on the worst of the failure, working to the boundary of sound paint and no further; switch to a smooth edge to clean up the same run. Keep strokes with the grain on wood. The four-edge design rewards a deliberate rotation habit — the painter who cycles edges keeps a keen cut all day; the one who rides a single edge into dullness is filing when he could be scraping.
