✓CHOOSE THIS WHEN

  • The documented job is “How to Paint an Existing Textured Wall (Orange Peel or Knockdown)”.

✕CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN

  • Smooth and lightly-textured walls — a 3/4″ nap on smooth or orange-peel wall lays heavy stipple, flings spatter, and leaves fat edge-beads at every pass; drop far down the ladder (3/8″ 47302 for smooth, 1/2″ 47300 for light texture).
  • Doors, cabinets, finish woodwork — the opposite end of the range; that’s the 1/4″ (47309).
  • Abrasive masonry — the defining boundary: brick faces, coarse stucco, cinder block, split-face block, weathered or rough-face-out boards, and fence work all want a long nap but will snag, fray, and tear microfiber, exactly as Hyde’s family record warns.
  • Those surfaces belong to Lamb Pro high-density polyester — 47365 at 3/4″, 47366 at 1-1/4″ — built to survive them.
  • The 47306 reaches the same depth as the 47365 but is the wrong fiber for the same masonry; matching nap is not enough when the surface is abrasive.

How the pros run it

01

Pump, don’t press

A deep nap is a paint pump: it works by ferrying volume into a hungry surface, not by force. Pressing a 3/4″ cover into texture floods the peaks, flings spatter as the long fibers whip off, and can drive the fine filaments against exactly the kind of surface that shreds them. Load it well, let it deliver at hand weight. Budget generously for paint — deep texture drinks it. De-lint before the first load, pre-dampen for waterborne paint, inspect in raking light before leaving any textured wall, and minimize passes on textured ceilings. Respect the abrasion limit — if you feel the cover catching or see filaments pulling, you’re on a surface that wants polyester, not microfiber; stop and switch. Cleaning takes longer with a dense deep nap holding this much paint — rinse until the water truly runs clear, spin hard, stand on end. Methods live in the paint a textured wall and paint a ceiling application guides.
