✕CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN

  • Heavy, forceful cutting — the light .058″ blade flexes under the pressure that belting, thick rubber, and dense sole leather demand; reach for the .065″/.083″ square points or the sole skiver (55190).
  • Long slabbing and deep production draws — the 3 has middle reach, not the 6’s or the 8″ knives’ length.
  • Skiving — thinning an edge is the skiver’s shaving job (55170), not a square-point cut.
  • Prying, scraping, or spreading — it is a keen cutting blade, not a lever or a putty knife.
  • In short, the 3 is a generalist: pushed to any extreme, one of its numbered siblings or the specialist knives will beat it, and the honest move is to use the right size rather than force the middle one.

How the pros run it

Straightedge for the long line

The 3 is long enough to use with a clamped steel straightedge; hand-held, any blade can wander. Use a low angle and a sliding draw. Lay the edge down and draw — leather and textile slice cleanly at a low angle and chatter at a steep one. Let the square end guard the work. Ride the blunt nose against the board so it can’t dive into what’s beneath, then cut to the line. Light gauge, light hand. The .058″ blade is limber by design; don’t force it through stock it wants to flex in — if the material fights back, reach for a stiffer .065″ or .083″ knife. This is hardened high-carbon steel, built to be maintained. Hone it back to keen on a stone, strop it true, and wipe it dry after damp, oily, or cased-leather work — carbon steel rusts overnight. That upkeep is what separates this heritage-style knife from replaceable-blade utility knives.
