Is this the right tool for your job?
✓CHOOSE THIS WHEN
- High Carbon Steel Blade: Provides strength and flexibility for precise application and smoothing.
- Ideal Flex Point: Allows for effective spreading of putty or joint compound.
- Full-Tang Blade: Ensures durability and stability during use.
✕CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
- Leveling a seam flat.
- Five inches cannot feather a joint out to the 10–14″ that erases the hump under side-light — that’s the taping knives, and butt joints need wider still.
- Whole-wall skimming runs off a 10–12″ blade.
- And it is not a scraper: flexible carbon bows off a dried ridge instead of shearing it, so between-coat clean-up belongs to the stiff chisel 02601.
- There is no steel striking cap on this butt — a popped nail mid-coat sends you to the Hammer Head® twin ([02770]) or a hammer.

How the pros run it
01
Pan discipline
load off the rim, wipe on the rim, keep the edge clean — a crumb tram-lines the pass. Bow, not angle: center pressure crowns the blade; corner pressure feathers an edge to zero. Carbon care: wash and dry the instant you’re off the wall; a dried carbon blade outlasts stainless, a wet-stored one pits. The 5″ is comfortable enough that people run whole tape coats with it and never pick up the 4″ — which is exactly why it’s the width some finishers standardize on.
