✕CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN

  • Not a consumable station blade — it is a whole riveted knife for one hand, not a mill blade that mounts in a cutting-floor handle (57xxx).
  • Not a delicate fine-tip knife — that is the (B/53300), whose lighter 17-gauge blade and finer point are made for the more delicate hand-cut; the (A) is the heavier, stronger-tipped tool.
  • Not a long inside-start blade — piercing the middle of a wide panel and drawing a long cut is the sharp-point knives’ job (55000/55050).
  • Not a maximum-force pry tool — the clipped point is stronger than a fine point but the knife is still a stitcher, not the stub-bladed abuse knife 61080.
  • And not a square-end knife — it is pointed, and will puncture the layer beneath; puncture-refusal is the square-point line’s guarantee.

How the pros run it

01

Grip and force

Fuller grip than the (B) invites — this blade is built to be driven, and the heavier gauge rewards a firm hand. Use the clipped point deliberately. Its strength is control and durability, not reach; lead close cuts with it, and let it take the tight radius the fine point would slip off. Angle. Low shear for channel and sole dressing, point-led for close work. What still kills it: even a clipped point is a point — twisting it as a pry or driving it into grit will chip it. The (A) tolerates more abuse than the (B), but it is not the 61080 heavy-duty stub; keep pry loads off it. Edge and rust. High-carbon cutlery steel takes a keen, re-takeable edge on a stone and blooms rust if left wet — hone it, strop it, wipe it dry after oily or damp work. The re-sharpenable edge is the whole return on a riveted personal knife.
