✓CHOOSE THIS WHEN

  • Core Size: 3/4″ core enhances paint capacity and ensures a smoother application.
  • Nap Size: 1/4″ nap ideal for ultra-smooth finishes on walls and trim.
  • Lint-Free: Guarantees a clean application without lint or shedding.

✕CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN

  • Walls and ceilings as a field.
  • A 1/4″ nap on anything but glass-smooth surface starves and skips the valleys, and it carries too little paint to feed a wall efficiently — for walls, step to the 3/8″ jumbo mini (47310) or a 9″ cover.
  • Any texture or masonry.
  • Microfiber tears on rough surface, and short nap can’t reach texture anyway.
  • Solvent-borne enamel and polyurethane you plan to throw the cover away after — a microfiber cover is too good to toss over a mineral-spirits bath; for use-and-discard solvent finishing, a foam mini (47348) is the rational cover.

How the pros run it

01

Gloss is the strictest finish there is, and the technique is built around not disturbing it

Thin coats, always — gloss magnifies both stipple and runs, so two light passes beat one heavy one. Light pressure — microfiber’s capacity floods a surface under weight (Hyde’s explicit caveat). Don’t overwork it — lay the paint, lay it off once in a single direction, and leave; going back into setting enamel drags marks the flat nap was there to prevent. Sand lightly between coats with a fine sponge to knock down any dust nibs, and tack off before recoating. Pre-dampen for waterborne enamels and load full and quiet. And clean it to keep it — spin out, wash in warm soapy water until it runs clear, stand on end to dry; microfiber rinses slower than a cheap cover (Hyde says so), so give the wash its minute.
